TPL installs mega reactor at Kochi Refinery for BPCL

MAMMOTH TASK: The 750-tonne reactor being placed in its position at the BPCL-Kochi Refinery in Kochi.

Hyderabad, September 10, 2009: Tata Projects Limited installed a mega reactor for Bharat Petroleum Corporation at its Kochi Refinery. Operations to position the Vacuum Gas Oil Hydro Desulphurisation (VGO HDS) reactor vertically on its foundation commenced in the early hours on Thursday.

The installation operations were nearly complete at the time of filing this report. The reactor, weighing 750 tonnes, was lifted up using a special strand jack powered by hydraulic packs. Two hydraulic jacks, each having a lifting capacity of 540 tonnes, were installed on the top of the specially positioned modular structures.

The modular tower assembly for supporting the strands and the jacks is 48-metre-high and had been built around the foundation on specially prepared basements.

The operations were being overseen by senior engineers from the refinery, led by its executive director E. Nandakumar and experts from Tata Projects Limited under the supervision of Engineers India Limited, New Delhi.

The bottom end of the reactor was supported on what is called a ‘chariot,’ which was rolled over a hard stand. This is a modern technique for lifting the reactor compared to the conventional method of using cranes. Mr. Nandakumar said that the mega reactor formed part of the new unit being set up as part of BPCL-Kochi Refinery’s modernisation project to upgrade the quality of fuels. The project is scheduled for completion in December.
